QI Program CPD Credits

The College of Family Physicians of Canada

Family physicians participating in the CPSO Quality Improvement Program may receive CPD credits through Mainpro+: Continuing Professional Development Program of the College of Family Physicians of Canada

  1. How many CPD credits will I receive? 
    1. Completion of Quality Improvement Tools 

      CPSO members who participate in the QI Program may be eligible to claim six Mainpro+ certified credits via the Practice Audit/Quality Assurance form. You may fill out one form for each tool you complete (Practice Profile, Self-Guided Chart Review, Data-Driven Quality Improvement), provided you are assessing different aspects of your practice.

      To do so, please log in to your Mainpro+ account, click “Enter a CPD Activity” and follow these steps:

      1. Select Assessment Category
      2. Click Certified
      3. Select Practice Audit/Quality Assurance Programs from the list
      4. Answer all the questions on the form
      5. Click submit

      Potential total number of credits for this part of the program: 18 Mainpro+ certified credits (based on the completion of one Practice Audit/Quality Assurance form for each of the three tools).

      You may be eligible to earn additional Mainpro+ certified credits by documenting your learning using a Linking Learning to Assessment or Linking Learning to Practice exercise.

    2. Completion of Practice Improvement Plan

      For completion of the Practice Improvement Plan (PIP), members may be eligible to claim six Mainpro+ certified credits by completing the Practice Audit/Quality Assurance form, as outlined above.

      In addition, each learning goal you identify and complete in your PIP may be eligible for additional credits via the Linking Learning exercises; each exercise is eligible for five Mainpro+ certified credits. To learn more, visit the CFPC Linking Learning webpage.

      Potential total number of credits for this part of the program: 16 Mainpro+ certified credits (based on the completion of the Practice Audit/Quality Assurance form for the PIP and one Linking Learning exercise for each learning goal identified and completed – minimum of two learning goals required).

    3. QI Coaching

      If you work with a QI coach after submission of your PIP, you may claim credits by completing Linking Learning exercises.

      Potential total number of credits for this part of the program: The total number of credits you could earn for this part of the program will vary depending on the extent of the coaching and how many Linking Learning exercises you complete.

  2. Can my peers who are providing feedback claim CPD credits?

    Yes! Peer reviewers providing feedback may be eligible to claim Mainpro+ certified credits for their work assessing their colleagues by completing the relevant activity form listed in the certified activities Assessment category.

  3. Can QI Coaches claim CPD credits?

    Yes! QI Coaches working with members can claim non-certified credits for the time spent providing the coaching. In addition, they may be eligible to claim Mainpro+ certified credits by documenting their learning using a Linking Learning to Assessment exercise.

Medical Psychotherapy Association of Canada

Members of the Medical Psychotherapy Association of Canada participating in the CPSO Quality Improvement Program may receive CE (Continuing Education) and CCI (Continuing Collegial Interaction) credits.

  1. How many CPD credits will I receive?

    The number of credits will depend on the number of hours you spend on the QI Program. The hours you report include the time it takes to complete the quality improvement tools and the Practice Improvement Plan (PIP), receive feedback and engage in coaching (as applicable). The quality improvement tools and the Practice Improvement Plan can be claimed under CE-Assessment for up to a maximum of 20 hours. Receiving feedback and engaging in coaching (as applicable) can be claimed under CCI (Medical Expert). Please note email correspondence is not eligible for CCI credits.

  2. Can my peers who are providing feedback claim CPD credits?

    Yes! Physicians providing feedback can be claimed under CCI (Medical Expert) based on hours.

  3. Can QI Coaches claim CPD credits?

    Yes! Physicians providing feedback can be claimed under CCI (Medical Expert) based on hours.

 

Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada

Specialists participating in the CPSO Quality Improvement Program may receive CPD credits through Maintenance of Certification (MOC) Program of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

  1. How many CPD credits will I receive?

Completion of Quality Improvement Tools  Physicians who receive feedback from a peer:

  • Practice Profile: You are eligible to submit your hours under Section 3: Feedback and improvement/Feedback received (3 credits per hour).
  • Self-guided Chart Review: You are eligible to submit your hours under Section 3: Feedback and improvement/Feedback received (3 credits per hour).
  • Data-Driven Quality Improvement: You are eligible to submit your hours under Section 3: Feedback and improvement/Feedback received (3 credits per hour).

Reporting can be claimed on the learning that has occurred on the time spent receiving, reviewing and reflecting on the feedback. 

If you do not receive feedback from a peer, you are eligible to submit the hours you spent preparing for each of the Quality Improvement Tools of the QI program under Section 2: Individual Learning: Activity preparation (previously Personal Learning Project) for 2 credits per hour.

Completion of Practice Improvement Plan

For completion of the Practice Improvement Plan (PIP), the number of credits will depend on the type of QI initiative that you participated in as outlined in the table below. These hours can be claimed under Section 3: Feedback and Improvement/Improvement initiatives.

  1. Can my peers who are providing feedback claim CPD credits?

Yes! Physicians providing feedback can report this under Section 3: Feedback delivered. (3 credits per hour to a maximum of 15 credits per year).  

  1. Can QI Coaches claim CPD credits?

Yes! QI Coaches working with physicians can report this learning activity under Section 3 Feedback delivered/Coaching or mentoring as a provider (3 credits per hour to a maximum of 15 credits per year).
