Preparing for a Peer Assessment

Peer assessment of an office practice generally takes about 3 to 3½ hours. The following checklist can help you prepare for your assessment.

Peer Assessment Checklist

  • Conduct a self-assessment. Identify opportunities for improvement and start to make any necessary changes to your practice. Assessors and the Quality Assurance Committee acknowledge that every practice has areas that need some improvement. Addressing those areas of your practice demonstrates motivation and an appreciation for improvement opportunities.
  • Decide whether you want your office to be open to patients during the assessment. Much of the assessor’s time will be spent reviewing medical records, although you need to be available after the records review for a discussion with the assessor. You may choose to see patients during the records review.
  • Develop a personal plan for continuing education, and feel free to make that plan and your previous continuing education activities available to the assessor for discussion and review.
  • If you feel more comfortable having someone present in your office with you during the assessment, please feel free to invite someone. Some physicians have asked colleagues, staff or a family member to be in attendance. A small number have had legal counsel present.
