Selection for Assessment
You may be selected for assessment in one of several ways:
- Random selection: The most common reason for peer assessment is that a physician is randomly chosen from the College’s register to participate in the program. Physicians who have been in independent practice for at least five years and who are under the age of 70 are eligible for random selection.
- Age-related assessment: Once a physician turns age 70, s/he will be selected for peer assessment (if the physician has not been randomly selected in the previous five years). These physicians are then assessed at every five years thereafter.
- Physicians interested in becoming assessors: All physician assessors must first successfully complete a peer assessment.
When a physician is selected to undergo assessment, there are a number of pre-assessment activities that take place. You will be asked to complete a Physician Questionnaire that will tell us about your practice, and this will help us identify the most appropriate assessor for your practice. You will also receive other information designed to ensure that there are no “surprises” before an assessment, including the reason you were selected for assessment (random, age, etc.) and a copy of a sample assessment report. In addition to helping you understand what to expect, you can also conduct your own self-assessment, if you wish.
Once an assessor is assigned, you will be notified of the assessor’s name and an approximate time frame for receiving contact from the assessor. The assessor will contact you to arrange a mutually convenient date for the assessment. Once the assessment is complete, you can expect to receive the assessment report and the Committee’s decision letter in about 12 weeks.
